EMDR – Possible Side Effects
As with any other form of psychotherapy, treatment with EMDR can increase the clients’ stress during or after EMDR treatment.
- Previously unprocessed memories may come to the surface, which may be felt as stress.
- It is possible that clients will have particularly intense physical sensations and emotions (abreactions) during the treatment session that neither the treating therapist nor they could predict.
- It is possible that the brain will continue to process the stressful experiences after EMDR treatment, resulting in newly emerging dreams, memories or feelings.
Sometimes, the intensity of the matters being treated in coaching or therapy sessions can sometimes have side effects on the client that cannot be excluded even in the self-application of EMDR in coaching. (Read this important information about this issue.)
