Strengthen Self-Image and Self-Confidence with EMDR Self-Coaching

The image people have of themselves greatly influences their thinking, feeling and the way they act. This image of oneself is made up of one's self-image, ideal and external image as mirrored by their environment. The more these three images line up, the more authentic as person acts, the more powerful they are and the more they can enjoy their life.  It is important to realize that this is always an idea, an interpretation of these images of oneself! That is - as is so often the case - the key point. Nothing is "inherently so"! It is always the individual who interprets the situation or the image.  We become aware of this when we discover that our way of thinking over time can sometimes change within seconds. It is a constant balancing of our sensations with our interpretation of them.  People often realize that they are not satisfied with themselves - and with that they mean their self-image. They would much prefer to be how they desire to be. Just like their ideal. This may be regarding skills or purely physical attributes. Self-destructive beliefs:
  • “I’m too fat!”
  • “My legs are too short!”
  • “My breasts are too small!”
  • “My nose is too big!”
  • “My butt is too fat!”
  • “I’m too ugly!”
  • “I’m just too stupid”
  • “I’m not smart enough”
And on and on. The list of external and internal forms of self-devaluation is long, very long. Understandably, it can be extremely helpful to change personal and particularly contemptuous beliefs of one’s self-image. This results in a constructive and affirmative attitude towards life.

Any perceived physical flaw or a flaw in one’s own “being” is clearly and often accompanied by high dissatisfaction.

With the Rapid Eye Movement Stimulation – basic EMDR intervention – feelings of inner dissatisfaction are often reduced. Even this minor change leads to a new and more positive perception of oneself. The self-image is enhanced and draws closer to the ideal!

This is also linked to self-confidence that allows us to evaluate our individual abilities and performance potential with regards to managing the demands of life. This assessment results either in anxiety due to the impending excessive amount of stress or a sense of empowerment. Feeling “capable” paves the path to a purposeful life, as we more often consciously take the development of our lives into our own hands rather than being plagued by self-doubt. Doubt, which tries to convince us both of our perceived limited level of ability and control as well as our excessive degree of dependence.
